Metabolic theories for the origin of life posit that inorganic catalysts enabled self-organized chemical precursors to pathways metabolism, including those make genetic molecules. Recently, experiments showing nonenzymatic versions a number core metabolic have started support this idea. However, experimental demonstrations reaction sequences along de novo ribonucleotide biosynthesis are limited. Here we show all three reactions pyrimidine nucleobase convert aspartate orotate proceed at 60 °C without photochemistry under aqueous conditions in presence metals such as Cu2+ and Mn4+.
